Smiling Goats

On why animals are so fun to watch.

At the beginning of May, we introduced our new goats, Nigerian Dwarfs named Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan. It was pretty easy to figure out who was who. Athos (pictured above in the middle) is the tallest, and he is calm and stately. Porthos looks like he can counsel the rest of the flock in whatever situation may arise. Aramis (pictured in the front) always seems to be up to something, and D’Artagnan is the smallest and shyest.

It took the Musketeers some time to warm up to the rest of the group. While the other animals wandered confidently into each new paddock I opened up, the four goats stayed under the hay wagon, watching everyone else.

Yesterday, I was pleased to see that Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan had learned the rotational grazing program. When I opened up the netting to the next paddock for the SGL, they bounded happily into the fresh forage.

This Week on the Farm

Wednesday morning, rain poured over the Christmas trees. I reveled in it as I moved sheep. The ground had been dry, and the precipitation was more than welcome.

The next day, fog settled across the farm.

Macchiata had a lot of fun climbing a bent tree. As she loved to bounce off the ewes’ backs when she lived in the barn, I wondered if she would jump off the trunk and do some more sheep surfing.
