Redbuds and Firs

On spring blooms and planting trees.

Redbud flowers near the creek.

A quick note: Depending on how Christmas tree planting goes, we may need to take a break from Sylvan Sundays next week. We will see you when we return!

Redbud trees grow abundantly in our area, purple flowers glowing in sunrises and sunsets. They’re some of the first color we see in spring, the blooms lining the country roads and highways.

When Mia and I ran down to the creek on Thursday, the buds were bright against the clear spring sky. Below them, tender violet flowers were scattered amongst the grass.

The wildflowers and redbuds are an encouraging sign of warmer weather and a beautiful spring.

This Week on the Farm

Soon, the redbuds will diminish, but other deciduous trees will be in full bloom.

And our new Christmas trees will be growing, too! Tree planting is in full swing. We have four types of firs: Canaan, Concolor, Turkish, and Korean-Balsam. We’ve planted the first two species before; the latter two are new to the farm. We saw Korean-Balsam firs during our trip to Michigan for the National Christmas Tree Association meeting last summer and thought we’d try them out!

Last weekend’s torrential rains put us behind in our planting schedule.

Thursday night, Jeff and I were working on some equipment when we heard high-pitched bleating in the corner of the paddock just outside the barn. We hurried to find Nyssa tending to twins who had been born while we had been working just 50 feet away.

Yesterday, we moved the ewes with their lambs outside to grass. It took a little bit for the lambs to figure out which way they needed to go, but they eventually decided it was best to follow their mums.

Another sign of spring is moving lambs and mums from the barn to the pastures.
