Unexpected

On four presents.

Last Sunday, I was bent over a corn bucket when I heard a high-pitched bleat.

Nah, that can't be right.

I had just checked the expectant ewe in the barn, and there were no lambs in that pen. It wasn't until I took feed to the pasture that I discovered what had made the sound: two lambs huddled in hay with their mom watching over them.

I grinned and stepped into the pasture. Everyone ran up to the feeders when they heard the jangle of corn kernels, except for one in the far corner.

That could mean two things: illness or...

More lambs!

There were four unexpected lambs: two ewes, two rams. We brought them in and gave them some supplemental glucose (pictured above). Then, Wednesday, the ewe in the barn lambed, big twin rams.

This Week on the Farm

It'll be another month before we expect more lambs. In the meantime, we'll finish our sheep pen improvement project, move the ewes from the pasture into the barn, and stock up on supplies like medicine and lamb milk formula.

They fly through the air with the greatest of ease at weighing time.
