Thriving in Cold and Snow
On winter skills.

Monday night, Jeff, Mia, and I drove carefully across snow and ice to the farm. I made my rounds, checking on the animals, breaking ice on their water tanks. The white sky grew blue with dusk and cast the same color over the land.
After breaking the ice, I drove over to check on the trees. They stood in their grids, comfortable with their surroundings. They have defenses against the weather, an evergreen way of thriving in the snow and cold, such as bark for insulation and needles that capture sunlight year-round. Special conduits for water help, too.
The animals also have their strategies, such as eating snow for water intake and trapping air in their fur for insulation (the goats are especially fuzzy right now).
Sometimes, anxiety gets the better of me, and I lie awake, hoping everyone is okay in the snow. Then, I arrive for chores in the morning, and all the animals are bright and chipper, trotting across their paddocks toward the RTV and their breakfast hay.
Thanks for Reading!
And I hope you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the week ahead with this moment preserved in picture and prose. Consider:

This Week on the Farm
It’s been fun playing in the snow with Mia during morning chores. The cold has been invigorating, providing a fresh start to the day and much gratitude for a hot cup of tea.

Mia, in her SuperDog cape, goes investigating.
The sheep have been digging in the snow, looking for the grass that hides underneath. When they come up to say hi, their faces wear frosty decorations.
