Super Dog

On guarding trees.

As farmers who raise both livestock and Christmas trees, Jeff and I have learned that Christmas trees are easier to keep inside their paddock. The sheep have a propensity to slip under the electric fence when they have thick fleeces that insulate them from the shock.

Even if they don’t move around much, the trees still need someone to keep an eye on them.

Mia is a good dog for the job, especially when she’s wearing her hi-viz vest. We call the vest “Mia’s cape,” and when she wears it, she’s SuperDog!

It might not take a superhero to guard trees, but Mia is on call for the job.

This Week on the Farm

Cattle have been part of our rotation this spring, as the neighboring herd was brought to the Hillside pasture to eat down and stomp down some of the bushes and thorn trees. As they munched, they moved frequently. But sometimes, they stopped by the Christmas tree patch to say “Moo.”

As summer progresses, tree shearing will be part of our routine. This means that some of the edges of the branches will be pruned to make the tree look more like a Christmas tree than a bushy tree.
