Stella and Luna

On sister sheep.

My favorite things about Shetland sheep include the variety in their fleeces’ colors, as well as their wild, yet curious, personalities. Stella (right) and her sister Luna may not look alike at first, but they’re often hanging out together.

Stella (so named because she was on the front page of the Indianapolis Star) is outgoing and the first to the feed trough. Luna is quieter but can still be bubbly.

Stella’s wool is looking phenomenal, and Luna’s is coming along nicely. It’ll be neat to see how they do in exhibitions and in their growth.

This Week on the Farm

Jeff worked on a system to make watering in the pasture easier. We have a 275-gallon IBC container, and at first, we filled the water tank directly from the container.

This required a lot of water in the tank to make sure there was enough to go around, and on hot days, the water became warm.

The new system uses a hose adapter and quick connects to attach a hose from the IBC container to a float valve in a small plastic tub. Now, the water will stay fresher, the small tub is easier to clean than the large tank, and we won’t use as much water. Happy sheep, goats, and llamas!
