Pumpkin Star
On growing in the fall.

In this season of pumpkin spice, there is a small patch of pumpkins growing on our farm. Jeff loves to plant them for the animals to eat and for decorations at our house.
Wednesday morning, I stopped by the patch to see how many pumpkins we might get before the end of the month. There were several small green balls still growing, a few medium-sized ones, and many flowers that will become pumpkins. These flowers have varying numbers of petals, depending on how far along they are.
Then, I found the pumpkin star pictured above.
A star is a special shape that guides the way. I have loved stargazing since I was a kid, learning constellations and looking for falling stars.
The first book Jeff and I looked at together was a book of constellations. When we are outside at night and see a large, bright star, he uses an app to identify it. Sometimes, the bright star is a planet. “There’s Mars,” or “There’s Saturn.”
The appearance of pumpkins may signal the oncoming darkness of winter, but I find hope in the light from stars that shine bigger and brighter in clear winter skies.
So, perhaps we can find hope in a pumpkin star and what it will grow into.

This Week on the Farm
Wednesday, I placed a round bale in the Shropshires’ paddock, the first of the season:

The shadows are of the tractor and me; they lengthen in the fall. It astonishes me how quickly the dark evenings arrive now.
