Protection Arrives
On new residents.
Coyotes and bobcats creep closer and closer to the sheep and goats, and winter is a prime time to lose livestock to predators. The electric netting helps, but we need another way to keep the small ruminants safe.
Enter llamas.
Last week, after a couple of months of searching, we picked up two guardian llamas. They're in quarantine right now, but they'll soon bond with the sheep and protect them.
At feeding time, after I'd thrown in hay and one llama had dived in to the forage (hence the ear at bottom left), the neighbors' calves became curious and wandered over, watching their new neighbors.

This Week on the Farm
The llamas will finish out their quarantine and join the sheep in the pasture. Yesterday's snow is hopefully the start to refreshing groundwater and creeks. We'll be keeping an eye on the Christmas trees to make sure they received all the moisture they needed.
