A Good Memory

On unexpected reactions to known elements.

I walk a lot of fence and start to know the miles of wires in the woodland:

This is where I saw a turtle last year; wildflowers grow in the corner; a worn deer path winds along the creek.

These particular logs were expected, the imminent result of a tree fallen on the fence last autumn. But I didn't expect my reaction to them this spring: Aw, this is where he cut the tree for me.

On a pleasant fall evening, my husband and I took a long walk to the back of the pasture. He carried his chain saw and divided the tree. The taut wire sprung upwards, I tightened the strainers, and we walked back to the barn and then went home for supper.

It was a beautiful evening that turned into a good memory shaped by logs.

This Week on the Farm

It's been raining, and the grass is becoming greener! We moved the sheep last night to graze a strip along a row of wild blackberries, making it easier for us to get to the fruits. They're not quite ripe yet, but soon!
