Farm Parade
On walking with the SGL.

The show lambs, a mix of Shetland and Shropshire ewes, adventured beyond the barn yesterday morning. They wandered out of their pen, ambled along the SGL paddock, then rested in shade along the driveway (in the picture, to the left of the RTV and water wagon in the distance).
But the adventurers needed their grain, and they needed to eat it back in their own pen. So I took a bucket of feed, drove to where they lay, and shook the grain against the bucket. They rose and trotted toward me. I turned and walked toward the barn, the lambs following.
The Shropshires were tall enough to eat out of the bucket, and one of them bounced beside me, attempting to put her head in it.
The SGL walked alongside the lambs on their side of the netting, chatting as they went. When the SGL reached the corner of their paddock, they stopped and watched the younger sheep walk away. It didn’t take long before everyone turned away from the parade and went back to foraging under the trees.
At the barn, I walked into the show lambs’ pen and poured their feed into the troughs. They galloped through the gateway and gulped down their feed, re-energizing after their parade.

And I hope you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the week ahead with this moment preserved in picture and prose. Consider:

This Week on the Farm
The goats and sheep were delighted to receive their pumpkins last week:

Jeff brought the pumpkins into the paddock and smashed them with his boot, opening them up for the SGL to eat the seeds and fruit.

Winterizing projects continue, with weatherproofing a hay wagon and preparing to pick up hay. The Hillside Pasture grass is recovering from fall grazing and dry weather. I’m hoping I can set up netting across the Hillside so the SGL can graze this month and even a little into December, thereby saving some hay for late December, January, and February.

Stickers are trending, and our Light in Winter artist, Lydia, showcases our animals in her artwork. Available now are “Gandalf the Ram” and “Snacking Llama.” These are great for water bottles, journals, and more!
