On recording memories.

L to R: Daishin, Macchiata, D’Artagnan, Aramis, Porthos, Athos, and Mocha
With lambing season underway, the sheep have received a lot of attention lately.
The goats and Daishin have been feeling left out. So, Friday night, they requested a family picture.
The goats jumped up on the firewood pile, jostling for position. Bumping against each other, they argued about who should stand where and who was too tall to stand in the front. Macchiata protested when the rest of the goats called her “short.” Mocha distanced herself from the fray, as it was the end of the week and she’d had enough of this nonsense.
Once everyone else was finally set, Daishin shyly stepped into the frame. He flicked his ears back and forth, trying to decide what pose would look best. He chose ears forward and smiled at the camera.
Then, after all that, it turned out that Kilross, the pygmy matriarch, had lain down for a nap and wasn’t in the picture at all.

This Week on the Farm
Lamb Count: 5
Ewes with newborn lambs like to keep their charges in a corner for protection. After the newest ram was moved to the lamb nursery, he found a quiet spot to lie down and rest. Mum stood watch while I crouched a few feet away, taking pictures.

New mum watches over her lamb, marked with an orange #5.
When the lambs are born, we watch the mothers to ensure they are taking care of the lambs’ needs, including providing plenty of milk and bringing the lambs close instead of pushing them away. Shropshires generally have good maternal instincts, and sure enough, this new mum took to her new role.
This upcoming week, I’ll be traveling for my off-farm job. Jeff and Dad will be watching the animals.
