Butterfly and Dog

Saturday in the barnyard, while taking a break from cleaning a pen, I watched leaves and tall grasses rustle with a warm breeze. From the grasses floated a yellow swallowtail butterfly, meandering upwards with a flap of its wings, then gliding downwards before flying up again.

The butterfly landed on Queen Anne’s lace, balancing with wings out on the sunburst of white flowers.

She was next to Mia, who sniffed at red clover, oblivious to the butterfly. Her tail moved precisely for just the right balance.

For a moment, the two were united: dog and butterfly.

Then, the butterfly flew off, and Mia pounced on a bug.

This Week on the Farm

During a morning pasture walk, I found a feather in the path. I wondered about its story: what bird had grown the feather, how it got there, where the bird was now.

It was also time for the Shropshires’ health check-up. Mia helped me corral them away from the Christmas trees, where I made notes of my observations and provided medication as needed.
