Anticipation

On making a big step that took lots of little ones first.

(There's only one day left to sign up for Light in Winter! Subscribe here.)

My husband (and the other half of Sylvanmore), Jeff, swung a halter over his shoulder and took a lead rope in hand to walk down the driveway from the barn to the horse pasture. He led Kellen back to the barn and tied him to the hitching post for outfitting him with harness. Kellen then pulled a small farm wagon around the barnyard.

It only took three sentences for me to describe the activity, but it's taken a process lasting at least two years to reach this point. Various delays, both good and bad, had meant that we couldn't make things happen when we wanted them to happen.

But during that time, we were taking small steps: finding a wagon, fixing harness, fitting tires, finding a trainer, searching for shafts (the long poles alongside the horse that he pulls the wagon with), sourcing out apples for horsey treats....

And last week, we finally put all the pieces together.

The entire ensemble is on the scroll-through.

And I hope you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the week ahead with this moment preserved in picture and prose. Consider:

This Week on the Farm

The rain began late this morning, and the ground will be soaking in every drop. The next ten days look to be dry though, so grain harvest will continue all around us. Two of our lambs will be going to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, at the end of the week. One is a ram lamb for sale, so if you're at NAILE and interested in looking at him, let me know!

Here is the full horse set-up in all its glory!
