After the Storms

On the effects of thunderstorms

Last week, five thunderstorms in as many days crashed through the region.

Thunder knocked at the barn door. Hail clattered against the metal roof. Blinding lightning streaked earthward.

During morning chores, the RTV splashed through rain and mud. The animals sloshed through puddles as they grazed. Humidity smothered everything.

But after afternoon storms came welcome relief from swampy heat. Thursday night after chores, we sat on the front porch, refreshed by the cool evening, watching a woodpecker sitting at the top of the lightpole and marveling at clouds billowing upward: oranges, pinks, blues, colors reflecting the sunset.

This Week on the Farm

Show day is Tuesday! We spent the week getting ready for State Fair, which included baths and mani/pedis for the sheep.

Meaux the Cat came to visit the show lambs and wish them luck.

“Good luck!”

Alongside getting ready for the State Fair, I moved netting for the sheep and goats. They were loathe to leave the shade under the trees at the edge of the pasture, but they dove right in to the fresh forage along the top of the ridge.

The Shetlands and goats enjoy new pasture.

Some of our State Fair lambs are available, including Mirari, full sister to last year’s Grand Champion Shetland Ewe. She is lovely and spirited, with a black outer fleece and white inner fleece. Reply to this email for more information, or contact us on Facebook or Instagram!

Mirari’s black outer fleece and white inner fleece will create some fun fiber projects!
