A Quiet Week

On peaceful fall mornings.

Peace has been prevalent on the farm this past week. When I arrived each morning, dew shone across the pastures. The Shropshires glowed with a halo from the sun rising behind them.

The SGL were ready for a move. I started setting up the netting on Tuesday when I took the picture above. The clouds over the Hillside looked like wispy birds against the autumn sky, which wore a shade of blue I only see in the fall. I set up the netting throughout the week, a couple of pieces at a time, after feeding and before leaving for off-farm work.

Friday, once I’d finished connecting all the fence, I walked along the sheep and goats’ old paddock to turn off the electric charger. The animals walked with me in a fuzzy mob, then turned to follow me to the gate leading into the Hillside Pasture. I opened it, and they bolted into the new paddock, veering over the fallen branches and along the new boundaries. Then, they galloped as a group back to me, skidding to a stop a few feet from where I stood. Everyone stared up at me for several seconds, then dispersed like nothing had happened.

Here and there, leaves are changing colors. Jeff brought home a pumpkin roll from an Amish-owned grocery store Friday. Our own pumpkins are growing in their patch, and we hope to have a few to display by Halloween. Saturday, we picnicked by one of the covered bridges, listening to horse hooves clip clop against the wood floor.

The quiet of it all, accompanied by the beautiful weather, is restful, and we’re ready for this week.

This Week on the Farm

We’re starting to think how the barn will be arranged for this winter. With our new Shropshires, we’ll strategize a new system for lambing.

Sometimes, there are mysteries on the farm. When I arrived Tuesday morning, I was startled to see a round bale away from its compatriots. Usually, round bales like to congregate in rows, and it’s not often they are found wandering off by themselves.

This bale rolled away from the bale rows and up a slight incline, landing perfectly nestled between these two trailers.

I suspect what happened is, the cylinder fell off the bale trailer during unloading and rolled with such force to this spot, but the wonder of finding it in just the right place behind one trailer and next to another is fun.
