A New Experiment
On mowing without a machine.

When starting out with Christmas trees and sheep, Jeff and I didn’t realize we had a secret weapon.
But then, Jeff read through the Wikipedia entry on Shropshires and came across this statement:
“In the 1990s, Shropshires were found to be the only breed that would not nibble on conifers or bite off the bark of fruit trees, making them especially popular with Christmas tree farmers.”
We decided to experiment. Last week, I enclosed a few trees in netting and turned our Shropshires out in the Christmas tree patch.
They ate around those few trees, so yesterday, I entrusted them with more and created new paddocks for them. Now, they can mow between the rows for us, eating their dinner at the same time.
Thanks for Reading!
And I hope you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the week ahead with this moment preserved in picture and prose. Consider:

This Week on the Farm
It only took two days before the vegetation around the tree pictured above was cleared:

Also, the Shropshire rams are turned out with the ewes, and we’re getting ready to undertake a big renovation project in the barn. This includes putting in automatic waterers with geothermal capabilities, which is especially exciting, as we’re hoping for no more ice to break in water tanks!
Farm Shop
We have two Shetland rams available for your flock, both sired by a North American International Livestock Exposition class winner. Their mothers have been great ewes for our farm. Here are some great genetics for your sheep!

Elrond, a yearling ram.

Bruinen, a ram lamb.
