Sheep Shall Play

On springtime frolics.

When spring arrives, sheep celebrate!

Our Shropshires are nearly done lambing. Sheepy families have moved from the barn to a new paddock. The lambs have begun eating hay, and now, they can check out grass. They’re so excited about this that the young animals dash around their enclosure, leaping and twisting, kicking their back pasterns together and running at full speed for a game of lamb tag.

Our expectant Shetland ewes took the Shropshires’ place, taking it easy in the barn.

The younger Shetland ewes remained in the pasture. Last night, they sprinted their paddock’s perimeter in a close-knit woolly ball, leaping over straw bales, echoing the play of the lambs.

It was a colorful evening with purples and reds in the clouds, woolly like the sheep.

When the Shetlands stopped sprinting, they stood on the straw bales, heads pivoting, surveying their domain.

It’s a good time of year.

This Week on the Farm

This week will be about shearing, putting together our entries for the Greencastle Wool Show, and mentally preparing for the continued cuteness overload of the Shetland lambs’ arrival 😁

Farm Shop

It’s 4-H lamb time! Make a reservation on Sylvanmore Shetlands or Shropshires for your 4-H project! We’ll have both market lambs and ewes available. So far, we’ve had the most interest in our breeding stock, so make sure to reply to this email and reserve your lamb before it’s too late.

If you know 4-H or FFA members who’d like to become involved in sheep production, let them know about our opportunities to get started in the industry. We’d love to help others start their own flock!
