Pura Vida

On lambs that could be surfers.

If our sheep lived on the beach, I imagine this lamb would be a surfer sheep, with tossed hair and relaxed demeanor.

The second round of lambing began on the same day that the first round ended. Our final Shropshire ewe and our first ewe of the Shetland group lambed within a few hours of each other on Tuesday night. Then, three more lambs (including Surfer Sheep) arrived over the next two days.

These small lambs have been enjoying their creep pen, which is a small area that only the lambs can enter. In it, I place their special lamb feed that helps them grow.

Thursday, I captured the video below: “When Mom wants you to clean your room but you pretend to be asleep.”

As a shepherd, it’s rewarding to see lambs lying down in the barn or the pasture. It means pura vida, happiness and optimism, all is right with the world.

Thanks for Reading!

And I hope you feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the week ahead with this moment preserved in picture and prose. Consider:

  • If you were at the beach this spring, would you surf, sunbathe, swim, or snooze?

Share your answer and this newsletter with someone who would go to the beach with you.

This Week on the Farm

When each lamb arrives, I take their weight so I can measure their growth throughout the year. For a brief moment, lambs fly, and this one, especially, looks quite happy to be flying in her sling.

We have four Shetland ewes left to lamb, and the pygmy doe is approaching her due date, as well. When we reach this time of year, we are in “cuteness overload” mode, and that is the best kind of overload you can have!
